The Brave Storyteller Newsletter: November

welcome.

Hi! It's me, Jess. Happy November! I'm here in your inbox to bring you this month's dose of information & inspiration! I'm pumped for this month's newsletter and I hope you are too. November has always been a jam packed month for us. It's still a bit busy for us photographers plus our household is jam packed with activities, sports, life, school, and Thanksgiving preparations (and hopefully family being able to come and visit us!). And, as a small business owner, I'm preparing for the upcoming holiday season!

I know that some people do the eye roll when others post things they are grateful for in November on social media, but I don't. I am always thrilled by people taking the initiative to practice gratitude and publicly acknowledge their blessings. If only we could remember this 365 days a year! So, that leads me to this: What are you grateful for?

happenings in hampton roads.

November really starts to get me into the holiday spirit- I'm one of those that uses Thanksgiving break to bust out the Christmas decorations! How about you? Here's a few things I rounded up for the Hampton Roads locals to explore this month. I love supporting our local small businesses!

  • McDonald's Holiday Lights at the Beach! This is our most favorite tradition! We love driving on the Virginia Beach boardwalk through the light displays with our windows down the the Christmas music cranked up! This starts 11/18 and runs until New Years Day- cash only!
  • WinterFest on the Wisconsin begins November 11 and continues through Christmas. Enjoy lights, below deck tours, music, and Santa on the historic Battleship Wisconsin in downtown Norfolk. There is an admission fee, but it sounds fun!
  • Driver Village Artisan & Farmer's Market November 13th & 27th - this is a favorite of mine! Local small businesses, artisans, and farmers gather in this cute little town and set up shop starting at 10:00am. I always find the absolute best vintage goodies at this Suffolk market!

something funny.

When is the turkey soup bad for your health? When you are the turkey.

Why was the Thanksgiving soup so expensive? It had 24 carrots!

My family told me to stop telling Thanksgiving jokes, but I said I couldn't quit cold turkey.

a tip from a pro.

When making an image, whether from your phone or camera, one thing you can do compositionally to make your image stronger is to ensure that the horizon line in the background is level/straight. This keeps the photo balanced and helps it to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Our brains like it when things make sense!

a little inspiration before you go.

"The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt." - Sylvia Plath

Direct and to the point, this one is. I'm guilty of second guessing myself and my creative instinct. I think all creatives are. It's just part of the artist process. Acknowledge what you are feeling and then just move on. Don't stay there in that doubt. You were made for this. Don't give up, just keep swimming.

See ya'll next month! Until then, I'll be here making art and catching memories.
